My favorite thing about space is how little we know about it. We’ve barely dipped our toes in the universe.

SUPERSTAR STORIES

New Narratives for the Next Generation

Star Goddesses stories are character-driven with each short episode following one woman as she tackles a scientific challenge, technological breakthrough, or policy dilemma. We reflect upon how her past has shaped her current endeavors, and we explore her vision of the future.  What is at a stake for our star goddess? What hurdles does she face, and how will she overcome them? Will she succeed, and if not, how will she move forward? What is the greater significance of her work and why should we Earthlings care? And what cosmic secrets will she share with the next generation of wonder women?

What is the bigger picture of her everyday work and why should we Earthlings care?

Catherine Nakalembe is an Ugandan remote scientist and Director of NASA’s Africa Harvest.

SUPERSTAR SESSIONS

Energize and Engage Public Discourse

Working in collaboration with our partners, we want to deliver education and engagement opportunities geared toward the general public, and more specifically, toward nurturing and supporting young women students and professionals interested in sustaining and advancing their space careers

Looking for life in all the right places, astrobiologist Nathalie Cabrol searches for stromatolites in the Atacama Desert.

Addressing the 2020 United Nations Women and Girls in Science Assembly, the SETI Institute’s Nathalie Cabrol noted that solutions for mitigating gender bias and improving gender equity are exceptionally complex ― yet the potential for transformation could be summarized in a few simple words ― nurture, support, empower, and protect women at all stages of their education and career. Cabrol stressed too that quotas are insulting to women and unfair to men, and the better way forward is equitable rights for all humans to receive the best education, equal access to career opportunities, and equal pay for equal talent and work, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, social status, or race.

Nurture, support, empower, and protect women at all stages of their education and career.

Space narratives often leave out Indigenous people and non-spacefaring nations ― which is a large chunk of the world. We can’t afford to do that, not if we’re truly committed to space for all humanity.

Space Ethics

I look up at the sky and feel that existential sense of cosmic loneliness. I’d look at the sky differently if I knew that there was life out there.
